Our First Explore Florida’s Wonders: Excursion to Crystal River on January 19, 2011 was a big success! 12 lucky children were enthralled by manatee interactions provided by Bird’s Underwater Inc. Within minutes of getting into the water at our first swim location, a young manatee decided to play with our group. For over 40 minutes the juvenile sea cow engaged our swimmers - investigating each child and rolling over for scratches.
Our swim was followed by a lunch at the Crystal River Archeological State Park, and a private tour provided by Park Ranger Henry Leroy Smith. As we toured the oldest documented site of civilization in Florida (over 2000 yrs ago), we learned about the mound indian culture, and how they survived for over 1600 yrs with little to no warfare. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Smith who provided one of the most insightful and informative tours we have the pleasure of experiencing!

A mock crime scene is constructed for our students to investigate!
In December 2010 the Discovery Center launched a new “traveling” CSI Training Extended Day program created by instructor Sarah Damien. Extended Day students at Evergreen Elementary experienced two weeks of special CSI Training which included hands-on learning exercises, mock crime scene investigations, and guest speakers from Marion County CSI Professionals.
